7 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route

7 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route

The Lemosho Route is celebrated for its spectacular scenery and relatively low foot traffic, offering one of the most fulfilling journeys to the summit of Africa’s tallest peak. Starting on Kilimanjaro’s western flank, the trek typically spans 7 to 10 days, allowing for a well-paced and immersive experience.

The adventure begins with a gentle climb through lush rainforests and alpine moorlands, where trekkers may spot diverse wildlife and marvel at breathtaking vistas. As the trail gains elevation, the landscape transforms—vegetation thins, the air grows thinner, and the physical challenge intensifies, pushing climbers to their limits.

Yet, the reward is unparalleled: panoramic summit views and an overwhelming sense of triumph that make every step worthwhile. Blending natural splendor with a thrilling physical test, the Lemosho Route stands out as a premier choice for adventurers aiming to conquer Mount Kilimanjaro.

Day 1: Arrival in Kilimanjaro/Moshi
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (or in Moshi if traveling overland), you will be transferred to your hotel. This day is for relaxation and preparation before your climb begins. Enjoy a comfortable overnight stay to rest and acclimatize.

Day 2: Arusha (1400m) to Londorossi Gate (2385m) to Big Tree Camp (2700m)
After breakfast, you will drive approximately three hours to Londorossi Gate, the starting point of your trek. If recent rains have made the roads difficult, the final stretch may require a short walk. At the gate, you will meet your team of guides and porters before beginning the trek through dense rainforest. The three-hour hike leads to Big Tree Camp, where you will spend the night surrounded by the sounds of the forest.

Day 3: Big Tree Camp (2780m) to Shira Plateau 1 (3500m)
Today’s trek continues through the rainforest before emerging onto open heathland. The three-hour hike offers a gradual ascent, allowing your body to adjust to the increasing altitude. You will camp at Shira Plateau 1, where the landscape opens up to breathtaking views of the mountain.

Day 4: Shira Plateau 1 (3500m) to Shira Plateau 2 (3840m)
This is a shorter trekking day, taking around three hours across the Shira Plateau. The relatively gentle walk provides an excellent opportunity for acclimatization, making it ideal for those still adjusting to the altitude or new to high-altitude trekking. You will spend the night at Shira Plateau 2, enjoying expansive views under the African sky.

Day 5: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp (3950m)
A longer but incredibly scenic day awaits as you traverse the mountain’s slopes, crossing two valleys and skirting the base of the summit massif. The seven-hour hike (approximately 15 km) takes you through a high-desert environment with striking rock formations. Though you ascend up to 700 meters, the net gain is only about 100 meters, as the trail includes descents into the Barranco Valley.

Day 6: Barranco Camp to Karanga Valley Camp (3950m)
The day begins with a scramble up the Barranco Wall, a fun and slightly challenging section that rewards you with spectacular views. Over the next five hours (6 km), you will cross two more valleys before reaching Karanga Valley Camp. This campsite offers stunning views of the Heim Glacier and provides another day of acclimatization with no net altitude gain.

Day 7: Karanga Valley Camp to Barafu Camp (4550m)
Today’s four-hour trek (7 km) takes you steadily upward into a more rugged, rocky landscape. Barafu, meaning “ice,” marks the average freezing level on the mountain. The temperatures drop noticeably here, and you will camp among the rocks, resting early in preparation for the summit push.

Summit Day: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5895m) to Millennium Camp
The most demanding and rewarding day begins with a nighttime ascent. Over approximately seven hours, you will climb over rock and scree, sometimes encountering snow, until you reach the crater rim. The final stretch to Uhuru Peak is steep, with loose scree, but the sunrise from the roof of Africa makes every step worth it. After celebrating at the summit, you will descend for about four hours to Barafu Camp for a quick rest before continuing to Millennium Camp, arriving by mid-afternoon.

Exit Day: Millennium Camp to Mweka Gate to Hotel
The final descent takes four to six hours (13 km) through lush forest to Mweka Gate, where you will meet your transport. This is also the time to thank and tip your guides and porters before returning to the hotel. A hot shower and a well-earned rest await, followed by an overnight stay to reflect on your incredible achievement.
