7 Days Kilimanjaro Umbwe Route
7 Days Kilimanjaro Umbwe Route
- Accommodation Style: Mid-range
- You Visit: Kilimanjaro
The Umbwe Route is the most demanding path to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro—a true test of endurance, skill, and determination.
Built for bold adventurers, this rugged and remote trail rewards those who dare with untouched beauty and unparalleled solitude. Trek through sun-scorched rock formations, navigate knife-edge ridges with dizzying drops, and ascend through primordial rainforests where gnarled roots weave through the earth.
Cross vast ice fields glinting like diamonds under the African sun, camp beneath endless starry skies, and rise at dawn to claim your victory on Uhuru Peak. Few will ever witness the raw majesty of this journey—but for those who conquer Umbwe, the triumph is unforgettable.
Day 1: Arrival in Moshi
Welcome to Tanzania! Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, our driver will greet you and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi for an overnight stay, allowing you to rest and prepare for the adventure ahead.
Day 2: Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Camp
Your trek begins with an early briefing and breakfast, followed by a one-hour drive to Umbwe Village (1,490 m / 4,890 ft). Here, your guides and porters will prepare your gear and provide a packed lunch. The ascent starts at Umbwe Gate, where you’ll follow a gentle vehicle track before branching onto the steep Umbwe Trail, leading you into the lush rainforest.
Day 3: Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp
Leaving the forest behind, the trail opens into moorland dotted with giant heather and erica. As you ascend the ridge—with dramatic drops on either side—the clouds may part, revealing breathtaking views of Uhuru Peak. After lunch, you’ll enter a surreal landscape of towering groundsels (Senecio kilimanjari), one of Kilimanjaro’s most unique ecosystems.
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
After breakfast, you’ll tackle the iconic Barranco Wall—a thrilling scramble that’s easier than it appears. Once atop the wall, you’ll be rewarded with stunning vistas of the Heim Glacier and the sweeping beauty of Kilimanjaro’s slopes.
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Today’s hike takes you across rugged ridges and valleys, merging with the Mweka Route—your future descent path. Arriving at Barafu Camp, you’ll rest and prepare for the summit push under the vast African sky.
Day 6: Summit Day! Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Rising at 11:30 PM, you’ll fuel up with tea and biscuits before setting off into the darkness. The challenging 6-hour climb through scree slopes between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers leads to Stella Point (5,685 m / 18,650 ft), where you’ll witness an unforgettable sunrise.
From here, a final push along the crater rim takes you to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,341 ft)—the Roof of Africa! Celebrate your achievement before descending to Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp.
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate – Return to Moshi/Arusha
After breakfast, enjoy a scenic 3-hour descent to Mweka Gate, where you’ll sign the register and receive your summit certificate (gold for Uhuru Peak, green for Stella Point). A vehicle will then take you back to Moshi or Arusha, marking the end of your incredible journey.
